Vulnerable sea birds and marine life in the Gulf of Mexico need our help.

Since an oil rig explosion on April 20, more than 42,000 gallons of crude oil a day have been spilling into the life-rich waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The surface oil slick already measures more than 2,000 square miles, and just in the short time it took to write this piece, the oil slick went from an area the size of Rhode Island to one the size of West Virginia, and it is rapidly spreading. It could take months to stop the leak.

The damage oil spills cause can go on for decades. Oil coats sea birds, limiting their ability to fly, float, and regulate body temperature. It devastates marine animals, damaging respiratory and reproductive systems, injuring eyes, and causing organ and tissue damage when ingested. Plant life and plankton that huge populations of marine animals rely on are also affected, leading to die-off and contamination that affect the entire food chain for generations.

Both NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and the US Fish and Wildlife Service have reported sighting whales near the oil spill. And that's just the undersea life that can be spotted from the air--other marine wildlife below the surface is in jeopardy as well.

The Gulf of Mexico is home to four species of endangered sea turtles as well as large populations of bluefin tuna (the Gulf is one of only two nurseries for the bluefin tuna).

Hundreds of miles of coastline along four states are threatened, including waters that are home to dolphins and a coastal wildlife preserve near the mouth of the Mississippi River.
