Not only wild animals are being impacted by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill: unprecedented numbers of pets are also being relinquished to shelters and rescue groups as families in the region face continuing unemployment and economic hardship.
The sudden increase in the number of pets coming through their doors means that animal rescue groups throughout the Gulf Coast region need immediate assistance with the funding of their day-to-day operations.
Shelters and other rescue groups from outside the region are stepping forward and offering to help take additional animals, similar to the rescue efforts made during Hurricane Katrina. But these groups also need assistance to transport and care for the pets they take in.
The Petfinder.com Foundation is working to help the shelters immediately impacted by the oil spill (a geographic area that they estimate runs from Galveston, TX, to Tallahassee, FL), as well as rescue groups willing to transport animals out of the area and care for them.
