Protect Haiti's Dogs - $14
As Haiti rebuilds, we have an opportunity to make something right for both Haiti's animals and people.
Before the earthquake, there were no animal welfare agencies in existence in Haiti -- no one doing the necessary work of caring for an estimated 300,000 street dogs. These dogs were left to run wild, eat whatever they could find, fight, breed, and die. Haiti has had the highest rate of rabies in the Western Hemisphere, and roaming dogs suffer like street dogs everywhere from neglect, injury, disease, and starvation. A vaccination campaign had started to reduce rabies, but was halted by the earthquake. Unless it is reinstated, rabies will again become a major threat.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is ensuring that these animals will not continue to be neglected or abused, partnering with other animal welfare groups to coordinate an unprecedented animal relief response in Haiti.
IFAW will start with the basics: primary health care, deworming, and vaccinations. Now you can help.
$14 provides primary health care, vaccinations, and deworming medication for one dog in Haiti. An additional wonderful thing about this work is that it also protects people -- there will be less danger of rabies spreading from a dog bite.
