Tens of thousands of earthquake survivors in Haiti are living without basic healthcare. Many are suffering from illnesses and injuries that are routinely addressed in the developed world. Incredibly, in a country only an hour and a half's journey by air from the United States, children are dying of preventable infections such as lockjaw (tetanus), and treatable illnesses such as typhoid and malaria.
Partners In Health (PIH) and its sister organization Zanmi Lasante (ZL) are running mobile medical clinics in settlement sites in Port-au-Prince where tens of thousands of displaced earthquake survivors are currently living.
The clinics provide comprehensive primary health care services, including reproductive health care, HIV testing, and malnutrition screening to an estimated population of 80,000 - 100,000 displaced people. Altogether, the mobile clinics treated nearly 4,200 patients during their first week of operation.
Each site is staffed by a team of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and lab technicians.
During the first week of PIH/ZL mobile clinics:
- Patients seen: 4,194
- Patients infected with sarcoptes (scabies): 414
- Patients needing treatment for intestinal parasites: 409
- Patients needing treatment for anemia: 391
- Patients suffering from urinary tract infections: 341
- HIV tests performed: 282 (16 tested positive)
- Patients needing treatment for malaria: 218
- Patients suspected of having typhoid: 74
- Patients diagnosed with mental health issues: 17
